3-PD & Fieldtrip for STEM/Science teachers, CAIRNS

Critical Minerals – Renewable Energy, Rocks-Critical Mineral Stories- Integrated Plate Tectonics (Rock Kit Teaching Pack, Plate Tectonics poster, hands-on exercises) & Our Place in Space

School: Cairns State High School, Sheridan St, Cairns North 4870   Meeting Room: sign in at front office to be directed, start of Fieldtrip – meet at Cairns SHS front office, 8:30am                           

Date: Wed 23 October 2024, 8:30am – 4:00pm – all-day PD event, STEM/EES/primary Science

Fieldtrip – Pioneer Cemetery– headstone rock-type worksheets, Prof Michael Bird (JCU)

Rocks & Critical Mineral Stories & integrated Plate Tectonics story (3D renders, virtuals, integrated teaching) year 4-8, 10:00am-11:15am

Critical Minerals (electric cars/renewable energy/recycling) year 9-12, 11:30-1:15pm

LUNCH break – catered lunch & tea/coffee provided

Our Place in Space (Mars-Earth landforms/rock-gas-ice/planetary influences) years 5-7, 2-4pm

The EarthExpo experience includes– 

1. Incursions – classroom lessons with students and teachers.
2. PD workshops – Professional development workshops for teachers (3-PD & fieldtrip @ $75 per attendee for visiting teachers, FREE to host-school teachers).

3. ASTA Certificate of attendance – A certificate of hours and workshop outcomes will be issued.

4. FREE rock kit – Host to receive a FREE rock kit and Plate Tectonics poster.

5. Introductory RocksExpo feature How to Use the Rock Kit and Teaching Pack 

6. Subsequent RocksExpo topics can be chosen from TESEP’s “The Challenging Earth” series 2 

7. Excursions – possible trip to local field outcrops (dev a guide for teachers) – on request

Presenter: Phil Gilmore has expertise in geological mapping, the history of the Earth and minerals across Australia.
