ASTA Executive Director Guy Micklethwait, Ruth Dircks Scholarship winner Joshua Vardy, Ruth Dircks, ASTA President Margaret Shepherd

The Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA) proudly celebrates the 2024 recipients of the prestigious Ruth Dircks Scholarship. This esteemed award continues to inspire and support excellence in science education, providing Australian teachers with valuable professional development opportunities at the annual CONASTA Conference.

Named in honor of Ruth Dircks, a dedicated Life Member and former ASTA President, the scholarship recognizes her significant contributions to advancing science education in Australia. Established through her generous donation of the 2002 Prime Minister’s Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools, Ruth’s legacy lives on, offering educators the chance to broaden their expertise.

This year, ASTA proudly awarded the Ruth Dircks Scholarship to Joshua Vardy and Tracy Guan. Each recipient received $1,500, covering their attendance at CONASTA 71, hosted by the Science Teachers Association of Victoria (STAV) from Sunday, July 7, to Thursday, July 11, 2024. In addition, three runners-up—Lesley Gough, Stella Ding, and Ashvitha Kannan—received complimentary conference passes, each valued at $740.

Reflecting on his experience, Joshua Vardy expressed his enthusiasm: “Traveling out of state and discovering new activities and resources was incredibly beneficial. These experiences have expanded my teaching toolbox, giving me access to proven strategies that will enhance my classroom effectiveness.”

Similarly, Tracy Guan shared her insights: “I had the opportunity to see how science teachers nationwide are integrating the latest research with innovative pedagogical techniques. This experience helped me build new skills, connect with like-minded colleagues, and left me feeling inspired to bring fresh ideas back to my students.”

The Ruth Dircks Scholarship remains a vital initiative, enabling teachers to participate in CONASTA, Australia’s premier science education conference. ASTA’s goal is to provide educators with key insights, valuable resources, and networking opportunities, all of which contribute to the continued improvement of science education across the country.

ASTA extends its sincere gratitude to its member Science Teacher Associations, as well as the government, industry sponsors, and stakeholders whose support makes this scholarship and other professional development opportunities possible.

Congratulations to Joshua Vardy and Tracy Guan for this well-deserved recognition. Their passion for science education reflects the enduring spirit of Ruth Dircks, and we look forward to seeing the continued impact of their contributions in the field.
