TESEP Professional Development Workshop Series in Earth and Environmental Science, Townsville Old

Riding the Climate Rollercoaster – Thursday 17 October

Professional development workshop examining climate through geologic time to today, related to plate tectonics/extinction events with graphs & statistics, yr 9-12, (multi-disciplinary crossover with Biology, Chemistry, Geography, STEM).

Venue: Pimlico State High School, 59 Fulham Rd, Pimlico, Townsville Qld

Meeting Room: H8 (attendees, to go to front office, sign in & get directed to the meeting room)

Date: Thursday 17 October 2024, 3:45pm check-in, for 4:00pm– 6:00pm

Field trip – Castle Hill – Saturday 19 October

Granite intrusive rocks explained, as well as an overview of the geology and landscape evolution of the Townsville area with guided worksheets (to be used by teachers for student fieldtrips) 

Venue: Start and finish at Castle Hill Lookout carpark.

Date: Saturday 19 October. Meet at the lookout at 9:15am for 9:30am to 12pm field trip. 

Registration fee: Free for teachers working at the host school and other sponsored schools. $65 (PD & Fieldtrip, or $40/PD or $40/Fieldtrip per attendee for each other (non-sponsored schools). 

Presenter: Phil Gilmore has expertise in geological mapping, the history of the Earth and minerals across Australia. His work in several states gives him many exciting rock, ore and fossil examples to share. 

The TESEP RocksExpo experience includes:

  1. PD workshops: after-school professional development workshops for teachers.
  2. Certificate of attendance: a certificate of hours and workshop outcomes will be issued. 
  3. FREE rock kit: host school to receive a FREE rock kit and Plate Tectonics poster.
  4. Rock and Critical Mineral Kit Teaching Packs: how to use the kits and resources (e.g. how to relate rock kit rocks to rock stories, 3D rendered samples, virtual thin sections and virtual outcrops). 
  5. Rock checks of school collections: to check labelling and suitability of existing school collections.
  6. Incursions: classroom lessons with students and teachers.
